Obtaining Slovak citizenship is a fairly long process that requires compliance with a number of conditions and going through several stages.

Here are the main ways and conditions for obtaining Slovak citizenship:

  1. Naturalization. The most common path for foreign citizens is naturalization.

The main requirements for naturalization include:

Residence on the basis of permanent residence: It is necessary to live in Slovakia on the basis of a permanent residence permit (PR) for at least 8 years.

Knowledge of the Slovak language: It is necessary to demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in the Slovak language (both spoken and written).

Compliance with the laws: The applicant must not have any problems with the law or a criminal record.

Financial stability: It is necessary to show evidence of a stable source of income and tax wealth.

  1. Citizenship through marriage. If you are married to a Slovak citizen, you can apply for citizenship after 5 years of residence in Slovakia on the basis of a PR obtained through marriage. The naturalization process may be expedited, but language requirements remain.
  2. Citizenship for children. By birth: A child born to Slovak citizens automatically becomes a citizen of Slovakia, regardless of where he or she was born. If a child was born on the territory of Slovakia, but his or her parents are not citizens, citizenship may be granted under certain conditions (for example, if the parents have permanent residence).
  3. Citizenship by descent. Persons whose parents or grandparents were Slovak citizens may be eligible for citizenship by descent. This will require proving their family ties to Slovak citizens.
  4. Special services to the state. In rare cases, Slovak citizenship may be granted on an expedited basis by decision of the president for exceptional services to the country – in the scientific, cultural, sports or economic spheres.

Stages of obtaining Slovak citizenship:

  1. Collection and submission of documents. The application for citizenship is submitted to the relevant authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Slovakia. Documents confirming your stay in the country, income certificates, language proficiency, a certificate of no criminal record and documents confirming the renunciation of previous citizenship are required.
  2. Passing a language test. You must pass an exam in the Slovak language, confirming your level of language proficiency.
  3. Consideration of the application. The process of obtaining citizenship can take several months or even up to a year.
  4. Taking the oath. After the application is approved, you will be invited to the ceremony of taking the oath of allegiance to Slovakia.
